Why historic district sidewalks are different
If your property sits inside an LPC-designated historic district — Park Slope, Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn Heights, Greenwich Village, Upper East Side Historic, Hamilton Heights, and dozens more — your sidewalk is part of the protected streetscape. A plain concrete pour is itself a Landmarks violation, separate from the DOT citation.
That means two permits, two inspections, and materials that match the historic character of the block.
The materials we work with
- Bluestone slabs — standard for Park Slope, Carroll Gardens, Cobble Hill, and most Brooklyn brownstone blocks. Sourced from PA quarries; thickness and color matched to existing.
- Red brick / hex pavers — common in parts of the Village and the Upper East Side.
- Pigmented concrete — used where LPC approves a concrete repair in a district that historically used colored concrete.
- Granite curb — replacement and resetting where the curb itself is contributing to the violation.
Why the city won't do this for you
City emergency-repair crews only pour plain gray concrete. In a historic district, that creates a Landmarks violation that costs more to remove and re-pour than just hiring a private contractor in the first place. This is the single biggest reason landmark-district owners can't wait for day 75.
